What is the Bible and where did it come from? Is it God's word? Is it reliable or has it been changed over time? These are very important to consider, if we are to trust in this book and put our life and faith on the line because of what is written. Is the Bible the Word of God?
A lot of people point to the first chapter and say "See? This whole thing is useless because it says the universe was created in six days". They discount the Bible right out of the starting gate because science shows the universe, and the earth are of great age.
2 Peter 3:8–9 reads: 'But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
I believe the six days may not be all that literal. The verse above shows God is an eternal being and he operates outside of our idea of time. Many scientists have actually discussed how the Biblical account of creation actually lines up rather well with the big bang theory. The topic of Creation vs. Evolution is a lengthy one for another time or post. I can't take a deep dive into that here. Please don't make the mistake of writing off the whole Bible flippantly. It is the most distributed book of all time. Shouldn't it be worth a deep look?
Is it reliable? Complete books have been written about the reliability of the Bible and how was it passed down. To address the textural integrity, analysis, and comparison of manuscripts becomes very technical and is also beyond the scope of my post. But changes and edits could negate reliability. If you are concerned about that.... there are good resources for research. Consider reading Josh McDowell "Evidence that demands a verdict". Josh set out to prove the Bible was 'hogwash' and ended up concluding just the opposite. You might also like a short 'zine' on the matter, that references over 20 works on the subject. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1828200693/reliable-you-dont-have-to-be-a-dummy
The Bible is not one single book written by some ancient scribe. It is a collection of over 60 writings, letters, or books written over a period estimated at about 1500 years. These have been gathered and are presented together in our modern-day Bible. Bible books were written at many different times and in many different places.
The books of the Bible were written by people from a diversity of walks of life. Matthew was a tax collector. Luke was a physician. James and John were fishermen. It is ordinary people giving an account and a testimony. Some of the authors state they were called or commanded to write.
What is truly amazing is this great diversity of writings, when gathered together, tell a complete picture of the creation and fall of man and how Christ reconciles man to God. It is God's revelation and covenant with the Jewish people and more. It shows how commandments and laws were bestowed upon the Jews and depicts the struggles of the Jewish nation as they rebelled, repented, and worshiped God. They obeyed at times and failed at times.
There is a remarkable honesty in the writings, because many of the prophets and heroes of the Bible books did not do God's will at first. God is also shown judging the Jewish people for not following his laws and commandments, and they are rebuked with plagues, punishments, and even captivity as slaves. It is not a flowery story. Horrible sins occur with devastating consequences.
And yet. the Bible is also filled with example after example of God's mercy and powerful miracles to protect and save the Jewish people. It is written that walls fall down, seas are parted, and prophets miraculously survive certain doom. Some of the accounts speak of individuals accomplishing the remarkable; A Young man taking down a huge giant with his sling; One soldier defeating thousands of enemies; Another knocking down a building by himself. God rewards the people's faith by miracles and his assisting hand. God is shown to be faithful to his promises. God sends Jesus, the Messiah, the savior to fulfill the law and reconcile all men to himself including non-jews. He offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all.
From the beginning to the end of all things, the Bible accounts are personal, moving and inspiring. When I read the Bible, it speaks to me personally. When Jesus says, for example, that "just looking at a woman with lust, we have committed adultery in our heart" I know exactly what he means as we have all experienced coveting and lust.
The words of the Bible convict and pierce the soul. When it speaks of Jesus having compassion on the man who had thousands of evil spirits, I think of myself reading a book on spirit-chanting and astral projection. Maybe I was saved because God had compassion and mercy on me as well and saved me before I got far into demonic practices?
Passage after passage speaks to my soul. It is clear why the Bible has been so hated and banned over time in many countries and societies, as it is so convicting and has the power to change lives.
Is the Bible the word of God? I believe it is by how it speaks to my soul, and by the evidence documented by Josh McDowell and others. You are not a fool to believe the Bible. There is evidence for its reliability. I hope you will take a good look at the book, the word of God, the Bible.
